CURATOR AND ARTIST: Acoki

Acoki (1980) lives in Prague and studies at the studio of Jiří Příhoda at the Academy of Visual Arts (AVU) in Prague. Basically she watches how things are being done, what is considered as given ("we accept it and don’t think about it anymore"), and suggests changes and different solutions. She is interested in how things are made and for which purpose they constitute a means. Sometimes she strives for a visible change, sometimes for a change that will only become apparent under certain conditions. Acoki draws upon the act of monitoring her immediate surroundings, which she completes (enhances) and modifies using installations, happenings and events. Her artworks are often on the level of unusual personal experience. Her work mainly deals with explorations of the public space, reactions on concrete situations and perception of the contemporary art in general. Acoki´s interest in the practical aspects of gallery operations is unique on the Czech scene. Her subtle interventions create problems for the gallery space or they crush the viewer’s expectations of the gallery as a neutral "display window" for art. Her project "Change" for a gallery located in the Royal Academy of Art - KABK (Den Haag) which she disguises with simple interventions, questioned the mechanism of galleries and their employees and can be described as a site-specific artwork. She addresses the exhibition process as the symbiosis of institutional roles (curator, theorist, visitor, artist etc.) In Acoki´s instalation the difference between erudice and artless audience apparently vanishes.
