Choosing for the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) means choosing for a future dedicated to art and culture. The KABK is a fascinating and inspiring community of young artists and designers. Education is focused on developing creativity, the urge to innovate and the development of a professional attitude, guided by teachers who have proved to be successful in their professional arts practices. During your education at our academy you will get the opportunity to develop your talents and ambitions in a way that suits your individual talents and needs.

The KABK offers a well equipped learning environment for students looking for a study in which traditional professional knowledge and skills are as much valued as the study of the new media in order to be able to contribute successfully to the contemporary and future world of art and design. The academy offers introductory courses for all students wanting to learn basic knowledge and skills in the fields of moving image, sound, web-site design and 3D modeling. The academy houses specialized workshops for textile, wood, metal en electronics. There are multimedia studios for digital recording and editing of image and sound. There are specialized studios for human interfacing (LabLand) and for augmented reality and radio frequency identification technology (AR+RFID Lab). In the Royal Gallery exhibitions are presented in which the artistic research of the teachers is shown. In the auditorium lectures are given about the history of art theory and about recent developments in the worlds of the arts, culture and the creative industries for an academy-wide audience.

However, the offerings of the KABK are not limited to the activities in the building at the Prinsessegracht. As a result of the collaboration with the Royal Conservatory and Leiden University, students are stimulated to follow courses, minor- and master-programs which are given in the building of the conservatory at the Juliana van Stolberglaan or in the university buildings in Leiden.

Students who want to study at the KABK are choosing for a future in the world of art and culture. The Royal Academy is a college of higher vocational education. To be admitted to the KABK it is required to have finished a pre-university education, an intermediate vocational or a higher general education. The course programs consist of artistic and theoretical elements, since the academy considers the creation of art and design not only as an artistic endeavor, but also as an intellectual challenge.

Interested students are invited to contact the student administration office (+31 (0)70 315 47 70) to make an appointment for an interview with the head or the coordinator of the department. To this interview, you should bring a varied selection of your work, which is not older than three years, and documents authenticating your preliminary training. The interview is intended to establish whether the work shown has enough quality and whether you are sufficiently talented and motivated to take part in the entrance examination. During the interview, an assessment will also be made of the way in which you are able to communicate effectively in English or Dutch. If your work, motivation and talent are being assessed positively, you will be invited to take part in the entrance examination. During the examination, the admission committee assesses your creative skills and your potential for becoming an artist or designer. Subsequently, the committee advises the Royal Academy's examination committee on whether or not to admit the candidate.
