Finances
You will need to prove that you will have enough money to live on while you are in the Netherlands. The monthly amount considered adequate depends on your status.
Since January 2007 the following amounts are required:
- student preparing for enrolment:
€
626,24(net)
- student:
€
752,82 (net) /
€
9033,84 per year, including tuition fee
- Socrates/Erasmus exchange student:
€
626,24 (net)
This money can come from any or all of the following sources. The proof required in each case is indicated.
- a student grant from your own country: take with you a document from the body that gives you your grant, which states the amount of the grant
- a student grant from the Netherlands: take with you a document from the body that gives you your grant, which states the amount of the grant
- if you are a student with money of your own: a statement with your name on it from a Dutch bank or an internationally known bank which shows that there is enough money in your account to cover your costs in the Netherlands.
- If you are supported financially by your parents or any other person: a signed letter stating the following:
1. he or she is willing to support you financially by transferring a monthly amount of
€
752,82 to you;
2. mentioning the exact period of study;
3. an additional bank statement which shows the balance of the account. The bank statement should clearly mention name and address of the bank in English and your bank account number.
Residence permit
All foreign students with an authorisation for temporary stay (MVV) will need a temporary residence permit (VTV) for study purposes, which is valid for one year. Other foreign students are not obliged to apply for the residence permit. However, if you have one it may help you easily further with all kind of formal procedures like opening a bank account, getting an insurance, etc. The requirements and necessary documents for this residence permit are:
- a valid national passport;
- two colour passport photographs;
- a certified copy of a birth certificate indicating your name, date of birth and place of birth. For most countries, this should be legalized, for some even verified (certified copies of birth certificates from some countries are only accepted if they are not older than six months
- proof of (provisional) registration at the Royal Academy of Art as a student. After students have paid their tuition fees, the student administration will issue a certificate of registration and payment for them, which serves as a proof of enrolment.
- sufficient financial means to pay for the study and the cost of living (situation as of January 2007):
€
752,82per month/
€
9033,84 per year, including tuition. For a preparatory year or those on the Socrates/Erasmus Programme (European exchange programme for students and teachers):
€
626,24 per month.
- adequate medical cover: applicants from many foreign countries are required to take out health insurance that covers all risks in The Netherlands - for further information see 'Insurance', below;
- students must not suffer from tuberculosis. Once students have arrived in The Netherlands, they have to undergo a tuberculosis examination. This examination is not required if students come from a European Union (EU)/European Economic Area (EEA) member state, or from Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, Surinam, Switzerland or the USA;
- students have to sign a declaration of temporary residence. In this 'study declaration', students state that they are staying in The Netherlands exclusively to study, and that they will leave the country on the termination of their studies;
- a guarantee that the applicant can return to their country of origin on the termination of their studies (only for students not from the EU/EEA). Students should also have enough money for the return journey;
- students must not have a criminal record. They are required to sign a statement about their past to confirm this.
The residence permit (VTV) should be applied for within three working days after arrival in The Netherlands, at the Alien Police Department in the city of residence. You need to call them to make an appointment: 0900 1234561.

Costs of residence permit
When you apply for a residence permit, you have to pay a handling fee (administration fee) of
€
433,- (Without MVV) or
€
188,- (With MVV). For EU/EEA nationals, the fee is
€
30. Paying the fee does not automatically mean that your application will be granted! The fee must be paid even if your application is turned down. From January 2003, the yearly extension costs are
€
285,- (for EU/EEA nationals:
€
30).
Municipality registration
Besides applying for a residence permit in the Netherlands, foreign students should also register in the population records of the municipality (Gemeentelijke Basis Administratie / GBA).
In The Hague, both aliens police department and municipal registration office (Dienst Burgerzaken / CBA) are located in the Immigration Office. Foreign students who live in The Hague are normally requested to register in the municipal register after they have been for their appointment at the aliens police department. For municipal registration purpose, students would need to bring the following documents:
- a valid passport or identity card;
- an original birth certificate (+ official translation). In many cases it must be legalized, in some cases even verified as well;
- some proof of where the student lives: for instance, a sale or tenancy contract or a written statement from the principal resident confirming that he/she allows the student to live there. In this case, a passport or identity card of that resident would also be needed as a check on the signature.
